Different kind of help.
Don't know if this is of use for you, but that's what I tell me customers when they ask me about why a picture should be retouched:
Looking at a person or a thing, your eyes and your brain automatically adapt the image you see to the current environment. A camera does not know how to do it and merely stores incoming light rays on a piece of film. Hence, looking at a photo your brain tries to adapt the picture to the current environment making a flower look blue in bad light conditions while you'd always consider it to be green if you're standing right next to it. Also, your brains does not only memorize a flat and steady 2D image of a person but a living and moving object. Thus you will always "filter out" the bad views and replace them with the better memory.
This is where a retoucherts job begins, not to change a persons or objects look, but instead to make an image look as if you were standing right next to it.
More or less
After a little surfing with Google, came up with a couple nuggets that might get you going...
1. See partial William Morris quote about 1/2-way down here:

2. Google search key: "famous graphic designers"
This looked promising: "names" of famous graphic designers. Google each name until you find relevant quotes...
Good luck on your paper. Much better you than me!
