Big challenge!

This photo is from about 1914 and unfortunately it just breaks apart when touched. I would dearly love to try to keep a copy of it as it is my mother who died recently but despite several feeble attempts with PSP7 it still ends up looking a mess. Can anyone give me some help with this one?

Is this a photo of the original, as it seems out of focus????
If it is a photo, is it possible for you to scan it to get more of the detail????

So far I've only taken a quick look at it.
Is it my imagination or is the Blue channel inverted?
Definitely looks fishy.

1. Duplicated the background
2. Looked at the channels. Selected the Red Channel, Select All, and Copied. Pasted this into the background layer.
3. Levels Adjustment Layer
4. Curves Adjustment Layer and made a small "S" curve.
5. Empty Layer set to Softlight Blend and with a white and black brushes
worked on details of the image.
6. Merged Visible while keeping the layers intact. Neat Image set at 45%
(mac version of NI) Also used USM for slight sharpening.
7. Empty Layer and used Clone Stamp Tool and Healing Brush on the damaged areas.
8. Merged Visible again and applied High Pass Sharpening set to Softlight.

I think with more time and effort I would use other Empty Layers to work on details of the image more.

Thanks for posting this image for us to work on.

I also went to the red channel and adjusted levels. With the levels dialogue still open I clicked save. After saving I cancelled.
-Turning all channels back on I duplicated my background layer, clicked levels and in the levels dialogue box clicked load to load my saved level settings.
-Levels adjustment layer.
(note: the next step was done beneath this levels layer)
-To "patch" the image I duplicated my deaturated image twice. On one layer I moved the image up on the canvas, the other I moved left. I turned both into mask layers filled with black and then painted with white on the areas I wanted to patch.
-Neat Image.
-Hue/Saturation adjustment layer with colorize box checked to return sepia tone.
