Problem Hat

In Photoshop I opened up the hat photo. I copied the layer to a new layer. To increase the contrast of the hat and background I took a look at the channels and the red channel seemed to have the most difference between the hat and the background. I selected the red channel. On the red channel I ran levels and after that followed up with the image adjustments threshold. That made all pixels either black or white. You can then copy the red channel and use it as an alpha channel (invert b&w) to make the selection.

Hi,

sorry for reacting so late but I've been away a few days ....

Diane,

thanks for your kindness!!!

Beside the LAB's Lightness Channel for the Jacket line (Attachment 1), like Phil, I'd also used the Red Channel (tweaked for contrast) for the rest of the selections:

*Shadows Selected, saved as channel and inverted (Attachment 2).

*Highlights Selected (Attachment 3).

*Saved all selections as Alpha Channels.

P.S. I'm going to continue this in my next post since I have more than 5 Attachments....

...This is very easy:

Go to one of your saved Alpha Channel/selection (in my example I started from the inverted Shadows Selection):
  • Keep the CTRL key pressed while clicking on the 'Inverted Shadows' mask Channel to select its 'luminosity'... (Attachment 1)

  • With the selection active, CTRL+SHIFT+click (you'll see a small + sign appear on the inside of the selection sing on the small hand/cursor) on the Highlights Mask Channel (Attachment 2) ... this will add your second selection to the first one ...

  • Finally, with your marching ants still active, CTRL+ALT+click (you'll see a small - sign appear on the inside of the selection sing on the small hand/cursor) on the Jacket line Mask Channel to subtract it from your selection... (Attachment 3)
  • Save your complete Shape/selection as a new Alpha Channel .. (Attachment 4)

  • Refine your mask (Attachment 5).

.... That's all there is to it ...

Hope this helps ...

If you run
Filter > Stylize > Find Edges
You will see the bottom right hand corner is the real problem

The ‘Lump’ that Flora mentioned looks to me like a plant in the background
You can clearly see a diagonal line half way up my attachment which I think is where the floor meets the wall. My guess is there is a fern in a pot behind them.
Also on my attachment you can clearly see the end of his jacket at the bottom of the picture and the vertical line of his trousers.
You can also see the buttons on his sleeve.

The rest you’ll have to guess at.

Ken
