Problem Picture!

I am new at retouching photos and don't quite know where to start.

I have a picture of my wife it's about 25 years old), the picture has been faded; you can see the original color around the outer edges, but the center of the picture the color has been destroyed due to aging and most likely a cheap scanner.

You can see the image at: http://www.pbase.com/chungvu/my_wife

I was wondering, if anyone would like to take a stab at trying to re-touch the photo to it's original colors, or perhaps, do whatever you would think looks best.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated too.

Thanks

Hi chungvu,

Welcome to RP!

I had a go at your picture .... (what a stunning woman is your wife!!!)

After checking the channels I noticed that the Blue Channel was quite damaged so I decided to replace it as follows:

* Created a copy of the document.

* Change the copy to L*A*B*.

* Used the Levels to 'tweak' the LAB Lightness Channel until I got it looking like in the first attachment.

* Selected and copied the tweaked Lightness Channel and pasted in onto the RGB Blue Channel.

That gave me a good start for correcting the colours using mostly Selective Colors Adjustment Layers.

Hope this helps.

Gotta agree with Flora, a beautiful picture, had to have a go.

Used curves and levels to colour correct, both the centre section, and the outer "frame" and try for a match.

New layer, and cloned to hide joins (sorry did'nt have time to do a good job on this), using clone tool in lighten mode and normal.

Not in Flora's league of course, but then who is.

Hi Chungvu,

Welcome to RetouchPro.

The blue channel is damaged but replacing it still does not solve the whole problem as there is fading in the other channels.

I found it easier to just clone round the edges and then colour correct.

Great Picture of a beautiful Lady.

Ken

Hi Chungvu.

I read your post at Innographx. I know you liked Judy and Sandra’s pictures, but I decided to try again with a lighter background as you asked. Hope you like it.

Ken
