Yuk!

Ever once in a while there is an edit that just doesn't come out right. Having yet to achieve an acceptable result, I post an unedited scan of a poor drugstore print, faded to orange, for suggestions as to a fresh approach. The photography wasn't much either. TIA...skip

Some color balance, selective color and stuff. Added an overlay and masked out the background to give the lady and the baby lights and shadows

Hi Skipc,

Quick colour correction and brighten using levels, then applied Neat Image to reduce noise a little.

My original edit attempt. Lacks pop—maybe it doesn't need any. It printed ok, the client was very happy. I would like to think I can do better work Thanks all...skip

PS My workflow:

Layer via copy, Multiply at around 32%, Flatten
Convert to LAB
Curves adjustment layer to correct color and contrast
Paint out background on Curves mask
Convert to RGB
Neat Image
USM 20,10,0

Since they are Kentucky folks (and being Kentucky folk myself despite actually living in Tennessee) I gave it a go. Just corrected with curves. levels and color balance then softened the edges. And fixed a couple of the worst nicks and scratches with the clone tool.

I found that a conventional setting of the White & Black (the baby's pupil and the brightest pearl on the the lady's necklace) points brought the red channel back into a useable range. From there, converted to LAB and color adjusted using another curve. Ran Neat Image to remove some of the noise. Sorry if I over softened the image but this was my 1st use of Neat Image.
Regards, MM
