Try making a selection of the shorts and copyi that to a new layer above the original and set the blend mode to screen. Load the shorts as a selection and do a Hue Saturation adjustment layer above that and reduce the saturation and raise the "lightness". Set the adjustment layer to screen. Go back into the adjustment layer and tweak if you need to.

I don't have time to do the whole thing.. so I've just shows a small area with the adjustment applied

Swampy has a very good method. Following her instructions, I duplicated the selected shorts two more times in Screen Mode and then applied a Hue/Sat Adj. Layer and got a very natural white in the shorts.

Hi,

Gollum,

Welcome to RP!

Swampy pointed you in the right direction...

I started exactly the way she did:

* selected the shorts,

* copied the selection on its own Layer twice and turned off the 'eye' of the top layer to make it invisible.

* set the first copied Layer's blending to Screen.

* made the top layer visible again desaturated it, inverted it and set its blending to Soft Light.

* Hue/Saturation to decrease Saturation ... (my shorts were now a very pale grey)

* Levels Adjustment Layer to turn them white.

Hope this helps ...

Hi Gollum.
Welcome to RetouchPro.

I used a slightly different method but got similar results.

Made a mask from the red channel
Copied the Blue channel to a Layer and adjusted levels (middle slider only)
Hue/Sat layer set Sat to zero and adjusted lightness then applied the layer mask
