Could use some help on this picture

I am new to this forum and I tried to polish up the photo a little bit.

1. I added a Levels Adjustment Layer with a Layer Mask on the boys face to darken it.
2. I added a Levels Adjustment Layer with a Layer Mask on the mother and the boy - invert the mask to select the christmas tree to darken it.
3. I added a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer with the same mask as 2. to make the tree more green and saturated. (Hue +15, Saturation +20, Lightness -6)

I needed 10 minutes at all. Any comments/suggestions ??? I am very interested in learning new techniques.

Greetings from Austria and a Happy New Year :-)

Welcome aboard. It's nice when new members join in but when you take the time to help another member on your first post, that's really nice. I think you did great with it. He looks alot better.

Here is another interpretation of the picture. I changed the masks to keep the details in the lower right and left corner and in the boy´s hair. Then I changed the Hue/Saturation Layer : Hue +15, Sat +40, Lightness -10 to accentuate the colorful christmas tree.

Greeting to all,
Berni :-)

One more try

Finally I added a bit of glamour to the picture as described in Katrin Eismann´s book (I like this book very much !!):

1. I merged the visible layers (Background + Adjustment Layers) as a new top layer.
2. Set the blending mode to screen.
3. Set the Opacity to 80%.
4. Apply the Gaussian Blur filter with a pretty high value (10-20).
5. Mask the faces of the mother and the boy with the radial gradient tool to keep the faces sharp an not too light.

Look at the result. I like this effect especially for this kind of pictures. It gives them a soft warm look.

Berni :-)

Wow Berni
That tree really stands out in the background now. I think I would have kept the deep color of the boys sweater you had in the first one with the changes you made in the last one. You have really put alot of effort into this one.
