Newbie requires help

Hi all, I'm new here (as of 10 minutes ago) and there's a lot to look at, I'd never in a million years be able to achieve what some of you do and therefore I'm looking for help. I've a photo of my since passed grandad and my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to have the only photo we have of him 'touched up'? to give to my father for his birthday. The only thing is is I'm entirely sure if I'm in the right place, and if I am, how to upload a picture a 'challenge'?

Sorry if this in the wrong place, or even considered cheeky, I just don't know where to start?

I've just realised I'm not the only one to request similar help re: last surviving photo and all that, the photo I have is pretty absymal, the original wasn't very detailed to start with, and is heavily damaged with scratches, places where the glass has stuck to the picture and pulled off more when seperated, I just don't know how to let you see it?

De Marcus™ go to the retouching forum and read Flora's tutorial on how to upload images here. She explains it easily. steveb

Quick fix

I messed around with it a bit.
Used the clone tool, cropped and then a levels adjustment.
There is more to do but it looks better. Maybe I will do some more later.

Maybe later

Since I am new also, I need to practice. I will try coloring the photo later after some more fixing.

First allow me to say welcome. I am sure as you dig around Retouchpro you will find tons of valuable information.

This was kind of a quickie and I am not completely pleased with the results. It's a great photo and a good opportunity to practice. Thanks for posting it.

I converted to grayscale and made some tonal changes. I then used the healing brush to remove scratches and to repair the gauges. On a new layer I added some cloning as well.

Similar clean up as the others. Removed some of the noise using an inverted high pass layer.

Color added

Well, I attempted to add color the best I could. As I said before, I am new to this and need the practice. What do you think?
