This is such a sweet photo...

1. Used brush tool set to linear dodge and applied at a medium opacity just to her eyes to help bring out the details
2. Did some light dodging to bring out some highlights on her face
3. Did a curves adjustment to reduce the color cast and bring out the tones
(tweaked the RGB curve, then went into the Green curve to tone down the green color cast)
4. Did a selective curves adjustment (appplied to just the background) to darken the background a bit
5. Cropped the image
6. Applied an USM (unsharp mask)

Note: I always work on a duplicate image and with adjustment layers so the original photo is not altered.

Here's some bam

It's really a great photo. I brightened up the image similar to what others have already mentioned but then did a couple of other mods. There's some tricky masking involved here, but the general steps were:

-Do lens blur on the tree trunk to give more DOF. Gaussian blur on the ground for the same reason
-Desaturate all but the girl

(this server seems slow as molasses right now)

Depends of course on what you mean by 'snap'. I suppose someone could really go overboard and you'd end up with an almost manga type image. This cutey deserves better, imo. As a disciple of the K.I.S.S. principle I went for 'soft realism' and tried to make it the pic that grannie would love to put on her mantlepiece:
– added sparkle to the eyes
– whitened teeth
– masked some skin blotchiness
– upped brightness a bit
– upped contrast a little
– did not sharpen!

The resulting file is 2,5MB though.

And this is a tighter crop, muted green highlights, and sharpened a little. Unfortunately the teeth are just too much beyond the DoF. And I was running out of pixels fast! But would this be the 'SNAP, POP & CRACKLE' you're looking for?

A slightly better quality here

Try a VERY simple Lab push on the a and b cuves, and then the L.

here's an example of what I mean, using the a curve... Just do the same with the b and the L, although the L will require a more disproportionate move for the highlights.

In order to remove the initial color cast, the a and b curves need to lay to the left or right of center. It seems alot of people here are familiar with Lab techniques, and Dan Margulis' work, etc. If not, be sure to pick up the greatest teachings on Lab/color correction ever written...

I'm posting late, but I thought I'd give it a try. This is a wonderful shot, Mark...full of possibilities. I did some color and contrast adjustments, cloned out some distractions and brightened up her eyes a bit. I also added a little "dramatic" lighting....
