Unhappy Almost black ceremony photos

My sister has asked me to perform a miracle and I don't think I can. She took some wedding ceremony photos for a bride and messed up big time. She changed the ISO to 1600 (I wouldn't go that high) and normally switches to auto mode. She forgot to switch to auto and was shooting at F11 throughout the ceremony. Apparently she doesn't check images regularly -- she was in way too bad of a mood for me to point that out last night. None of my tricks are making any difference. Any pointers out there? She said all she wants are some images that are viewable since bride's rarely choose ceremony photos for enlargements.

Thanks in advance.
Lynell

The black clip is quite nasty in the jpeg you have posted (made worse by compression). Are you working from digi? I had a quick look at the image to see how much detail I could pull out just using levels and some noise filtering. I would most probably be able to do better with an original RAW file. Maybe if you could post a cropped, uncompressed portion of the original I'll have a stab at that to see if I can have any more luck.

Hi there

Here is my attempt... I did smooth out the luminosity some then tried to add just a hint of color.

Well my attempt

I copied the layer many times using screen blending mode
Then I ran Neat Image using aggressive settings
I used levels after that.
