Newbie Please help with this Katrina image - uneven colour cast, etc

Hi there!

A friend of mine is a Police Officer in Gulfport, MS, and after Katrina, he found this picture lying on the ground near a levelled apartment building. He's kept it ever since and would like to find the family who owns this picture. When chatting with him, I expressed interest in the image and offered to clean it up for him, if I could. If the image is able to be fixed, he says he will place it in the Sun Herald in an effort to locate the owners. It's a lovely picture of a wonderful family moment, and I'd really love to be able to deliver on this one. But I'm having trouble!

After a couple of days of starts and stops and restarts, I can't seem to manage to get a decent headstart. I've tried a couple of methods in Katrina Eismann's excellent Restoration & Retouching book, but with no acceptable result.

So, it's time to ask the experts here for help!

Please someone - help me get a clue!

Many thanks,
Petra

Sometimes with a bit of fancy channel stuff you can restore this type of image, however this time the Red and Green channels are too far gone to provide anything very useful.

On the good side, if you look at the channels you'll see that the blue channel is almost instact.

Masking a levels adjustment on the right hand side you can improve the Red and Green channels.

I then used the blue channel, with a bit of the Green and Red to form a greyscale image.

Did some retouching on the greyscale image then just painted the colours back in.

Wow! That's a stunning recovery. Amazing.

I'd just like to clarify something though, if I may.

Are you running levels adjustments on the red and green channels separately in the channels palatte, and masking those channels in the channels palette, or are you working in the layers palette? (Sorry if that's a dumb question! )

And thank you!

No, not a dumb question by any means - actually it's quite tricky.

I separated out the Red and Green channels into new layers. There a few ways to do this, I used the channel mixer then stamped to a new layer (<Shift><Ctrl><Alt><E>).

To combine again them, right click on the layer select "Blending Options", when that screen opens up look for "Advanced Blending". There you can choose which of the layer's channels to use. For the Green leave just the Green checked, and for Red just the Red. The Blue channel will come through from the underneath layer.

Thumbs down Re: Please help with this Katrina image - uneven colour cast, etc

Thanks for the further explanation, byRo!

You've given me a completely new angle, so cheers.

It's now almost 1.30am downunder, so time to hit the hay; but I'll be onto this again first thing tomorrow.

Thanks again, and have a great day!

Petra

Hi there

Thought I would give it a try... could not get the detail of byRo...but after I did it... might as well post it.

I used the channel mixer to get the best grayscale I could then evened the luminosity here and there ...added some color back in.

Wow, you guys have done some lovely work.

I had to walk away from it for a couple of days, before I ended up kicking the cat or something. And she's a nice cat, so I wouldn't want to do that.

But, it's time to start again. Can't procrastinate forever!

Thanks, guys.

Thank you, Daviskw
It's hard to get a good result with such a small photo, but I learned a trick or two

pepperspray, good luck and remember (as Dexter's mom said): A little patience goes a long long way
