On this picture, it required a quick mask of the red in the car and then of the wheels. Masked the red by using the A channel, and the wheels in the Blue channel. For a basic guide on how LAB curves work, you could check here:

If you are interested in this sort of thing, you could do worse than reading Dan Margulis' The Canyon Conundrum, which is the best (and maybe the only) book written on editing in LAB.
