Enhancing scan of an historical photo to read sign text

we have an old photograph of a building ... there is a sign and the words are almost ... but not quite legible. Is there a way or a resource where we could get the image enhanced sufficiently to read it? The original files were created by high res scan and are in TIFF format. Thank you in advance for any help.

Perhaps if you crop just the sign section and upload it here we can take a look.

There are 3rd party tools that will enlarge using fractal technology that may help. You may be able to download a demo and try an enlargement of just a copy of the cropped area in a separate file. Genuine Fractals and Blowup are two such tools that come to mind.

thank you very much ... I know nothing about this. Which file extension should I use to minimize data loss ... for now I have saved simple low res .jpg cropped section. There is a file size limit on this site for attachments

The text should be legible from a high res scan but not the low res version you have uploaded - it is way too small. Try uploading a high res version here:

It would help if you could just crop the image down to the sign portion only.
