Smile Need Help With The Face

I used a number of techniques/filters on this image (i.e. duplicate and move, dust and scratch removal, channel mixing, duplicating and healing brush, among others). However I still need help with the face. And, any other suggestions are gladly welcomed. The File Restore dates to the early 1900s I think. File RestoreA is the after version that I need help with, specifically the face.

Thanks
Morris

DC:

Thanks for your efforts. But could I impose and ask for the steps you went through or at least some guidance on how you achieved your results.

Re: Need Help With The Face

Good practice for me. (I use photoshop 6)

1. despeckle filter
2. used clone tool on obvious areas of the face
3. gaussian blur, mask, painted back blur at 50% only on face.
4. levels adjusment
5. added some color.

That is all I did for now. Next step would be the clothes and then the background.

What do you think so far?

RRUSTIC:

You went down a path I had not comtempated (e. g. adding color). Looks great so far. I have the original, which is in balck and white. So one can obviously use one's imagination as to the color. I will be happy when he face looks correct. Thanks for the ideas for the face touchup.

The steps I took were:

Got ride of all channels except the red channel. That removed the dicsolored areas.

Cloned out the inconsistent areas and marks on the face and background.

Did a glaussian blur (with a radius of 4.0) and with a mask and using a paintbrush just smoothed out the noise on his face.

Added a multiply layer at 44% and and masked it to include just his face to give a litle more depth.

On a new layer used cloning at 15% on different sports on the face to even out the overall face.

Selected the background and copied it to a new layer and added a glaussian blur with a radius around 4.6.

With the background selected I used the gradient tool (black on the foreground and light grey on the background) and used it to further smooth out the background.

Re: Need Help With The Face

Hi there

I gave it a go as well.

I first made a pen selection of the background and made a new one based loosely on the original... just solid fills... smoke brush and noise.

I then used the green and red channels to repair some of the problems in the blue channel.

I little cloning and copying selections of coat to repair the repeat patterns.

I did use the degrunge routine on the jacket to even some of the blotches.

A little PWL on the hair and all done. I liked to grain so I did not try to remove it.

Re: Need Help With The Face

I want to thank everyone for your help, suggestions and advise. I am pleased with the results. As I posted in one of the other forums I inherited a stable of old family photos. So, I will be back for advise in the future.

Thanks again.
