This is probably the easiest way to create fog. Maybe not the most realistic, but it is simple:
- Open image
- Add a layer on top of it
- Set the foreground color to white
- Select the gradient tool
- Set the gradient tool to "foreground to transparent"
- On the newly created layer, and going straight down, use the gradient tool from the top edge of the picture to the bottom edge
- Set the opacity of the layer to your liking
- If you want a bit more realism, with a large, very soft brush with opacity set to 7 or 8 percent, erase lightly the areas that you would like less fog
- With a large, very soft brush with opacity set to 7 or 8 percent, paint with white the areas that you would like more fog
So the layer with the gradient doesn't get destroyed with the erasing or painting, you can use a layer mask and paint it with white if you want to increase the fog effect or black if you want to decrease it.
