Help with putting pupils into dog's eyes....

I've been having my first go with the liquify filter this afternoon, and having some fun. I ended up doing something very basic with a pic of a friend's dog, making his eyes bigger and nose smaller.

His enlarged eyes ended up looking rather weirdly full of white light reflection. I decided I wanted to reduce the strangeness of his eyes, so decided to try and introduce pupils. All I did was put a blob in each eye with a black brush at 47% opacity.

I'm not sure how well this has worked, maybe they don't look like pupils at all.... Maybe someone could suggest something more realistic. (I want the dog to look happy/friendly, not weird....)

I'm uploading the original file, and the file with pupils added, and would be really grateful for some feedback.

Eyes, (human or canine) are complex structures. Your best bet would be to "transplant" some eyes from another dog picture. Since you are just taking the eyes, any picture will do. Do a search for "dog eyes" in Google Images.

Thank you very much for that Veryweird! The answer seems so obvious when someone tells you what to do... I've had a go, but I'm not sure I have got it right... It certainly seems a big improvement on my terrible first attempt

Okay, sorry to be a nuisance but this is another attempt. I just moved the pupils slightly with the liquify tool, so the dog was squinting less, and I burned in the colour of the irises a bit. I also cleaned up the lines of the whites of the eyes a bit...

Thats quite good. Just touch up the highlights in the eyes so that they are roughly in the same position in each eye, and maybe smooth out the edges of the iris with the smudge tool or liquify, and you're pretty much there.

I think the only answer is to replace the eyes. Here's a quickie. The eyes I used are from one of my Malinois. Here's the link to the high resolution if you want to used the same eyes.

I realized I'd only done the edits on the small versions I'd uploaded! Drat! So I started again from scratch on the psd file. I've put in new highlights - hopefully matching okay. I've also fiddled around a bit with the irises, using the smudge tool. All very new stuff for me!

Hopefully this is 'good enough' to pass muster for a general viewing....but of course I would like to hear if there are changes I should still try and make....

I rather like the strange vibrancy of the first lot of eyes though, and I think I would like to go with them if they don't look too odd in a 'bad photoshopping' way.... What I need to do is give it some time, and then come back for a fresh look. If the first lot of eyes are too bad, I will certainly use yours. Thank you again for your trouble....

I don't believe it! Just when you have told me in another thread about looking at highlights in eyes, and making sure the shadows fall accordingly. I have failed to do it the other way round. I did not look at the shadows on the dog, and place the highlights in the eyes accordingly!!! It's too late for me to change it now (too difficult), but I guess at least I have spotted my mistake....

I think it looks very good. Nice soulful eyes.

Don't worry too much about the light direction. In this case, it is just possible to have a soft, directional (spotlight) light high and slightly to the left of the dog, but directed more to the right. It's streching it a bit, but hey, it's your picture :-)

I have Corel Photoshop and they have a good animal eye tool on there. Found the software at Target for $80 and BestBuy has it for about $100. I use it all the time for my mom's dog and my cats. Love it!
