Picture improvement

I need some help in improving the overall picture.
Do what you think should be done to improve the final picture,
but please tell me the steps. This is my learning curve.

Please feel free to make improvements on this picture, the lady in front appears to be
over-exposed due to direct flash.
This family knows me and requested me to take their pic in church.
Please let me know the steps so that I could learn from you as well.

When I look at this photo, the background is so busy, it takes away from the people sitting in the booths. If it were my picture, I would remove all except the pews and the people in them... that should be the focus of the photo. Can't tell you what steps to use because I don't know what program you are using. Sorry!

Ian, working on a copy of the original I cropped it closer to the family
selected the family, inverted selection blurred and darkened the background
on a New, Color mode layer I painted the blown out lady and adjusted the Hue/Saturation on the front three ladies
