My Mother

I did this picture several times. Had many problems with it, I didn't like the black and white versions that i tried. Wasn't very good at coloring so i went with a tone to the picture. Would like your critique on this photo if there is anything i could have done differently or better. The hair was especially challenging to me as i am not an artist. A little history on this photo. This photo was taken in a carnival photo boots in the mid 1930's, not sure of the exact date. My father carried it around in his wallet for almost 40 years. My mother was into working on photos but found this one extremely difficult for her. So I said i would give it a try. Was just a beginner at that time using photoshop 6.01. She wanted to give it to him as a Christmas present. I finally sent it out when i couldn't do the photo. Last November I gave it another try this time using photoshop cs4.

I dare say your photo is as good as that which came from the booth..!

You did a very good job considering what you had to work with...

Re: My Mother

I like this story very much, it is romantic.

I fixed the eyes a little bit more.

Here is my try.

Re: My Mother

Thank you all for the encouragement. It was a difficult photo for me to do. I learned a lot from this site everyone is so helpful here. Cupcake I like what you did with the eyes. The left eye was very damaged so i copied over the iris from the right eye. never thought about the light spots in there. See i learned something new again today. Again thank you all.

Re: My Mother

Unimatrix001,
I think you did a good job also. There really just wasn't much detail within the image to bring out. If you add too much detail by hand, it begins to look a bit unusual. So, you may have to decide if you want to leave it "soft" (as is), or continue adding detail to all of the facial and clothing elements. I think leaving it soft and just cleaning up the image as much as possible looks more natural, or more like the original would have looked.
