Newbie Shadow removal help

Here is a photo from my friend's wedding that my other friend gave to me to practice on. I have simply done a levels adjustment layer using the auto button and shadows & highlights. The middle picture is my first attempt, but turned out a bit too bright. The third is my next attempt and I tried to go easy on it this time. I posted the first & second pics in the critique forum and was told that getting rid of the very noticeable shadows would help a lot. My question is how do I get rid of the shadows? In the third pic, I have done a little cloning on the shadow beside her dress. I know it isn't well done, but is it moving in the right direction? How would you get rid of the bad shadows if this were for a client?

First & second:

Re: Shadow removal help

I guess I'd lighten the shadow using the Levels or Curves in "Luminance"-Mode (this way you don't loose any details if you're doing it well).

Re: Shadow removal help

I would use targeted curves method & some cloning.

Re: Shadow removal help

All the above and you can also try cloning with the brush in the "color" blend mode. Sample a very close adjacent color and then clone, staying in the same direction as grain, floor, etc. This is often useful in smaller areas.
