Need to remove streaks, enhance detail

Hi,
I'm working with a scan of a B/W photo a friend took. While trying to work with levels, etc. to get as much detail as I can out of the dark rock shadow areas on the left, I've noticed that they have subtle dark streaks running vertically over them. Is there a way I can isolate and either eliminate or neutralize these, but still have some detail in the rocks (I realize that it's very dark and there may not be much information to be had). When I try to use levels, it only seems to enhance the streaks.
I'd appreciate any tips or suggestions any of you might have!

Gordon, try to run a noise filter like Noiseware on the image as the 1st step. Then you canraise the shadows a little. Don't expect much in the way of detail as the shadows have been sharply clipped and there is virtually no difference between the channel data in the shadow areas, which means all you will get is a large mass of area that can be made to look lighter or darker.

Did a quick fix by adjusted the shadows and highlights a bit then just used the patch tool on small areas from the streaks to the good rocks and faded each move to cover the streaks and fake the rock face
