London Trolley Bus

Hi, I have spent quite some time trying to do "something" with this old 1950's photo of a London Trolley bus with no success. Does any one have any suggestions please, the worst part is the colour red of the bus, even going greyscale does not seem to make it any better. Would be grateful as I say for suggestions. What retouching software are you using?

Photoshop 7:
A couple masked screen layers to keep the sky the same but lighten the bus and selectively darken the signs and stuff on the bus
Hue/saturation layer to lesson and darken the magenta, boost the reds, reduce the cyans
noise reduction

Just playing around...
Selected background, H-S colorize, Lens blur.
Selected bus, Color Balance, Smart Blur, Hi-pass sharpening.
Spectators and tires were colorized with the background, but otherwise treated with the bus.

[Cupcake]

Removed the noise,cleaned the sky and add blue to the sky.

Light painted the bus.

Hi, thanks for the welcome, I am using PS7 but a very inexperienced user, a lot to learn. what has been achieved with my photo by yourself, Steve13 and Cupcake is fantastic,it is encouraging that I may at last learn to get to grips with photo restorations. Thanks.
