need serious help

Hi all,

i have a old book which i have to restore. paper is around 300 years old and text is almost faded. i have to just remove the paper and place a new paper behind.

what i am doing.

selecting text color by magic wand, redefine edges, and purify manually with lasso tool.

this is not helping me properly since text color is so close to paper color now. i need any solution.

Re: need serious help

Dr Morpheus, there are many ways to do this but here is one. Convert the image to LAB color mode. Use a curve to induce contrast between the writing and the background. Desaturate. Use the Dodge tool to paint away the background and the Burn tool to darken the remaining background. Attached is a 2 minute job. You can make it a lot cleaner if you spens more time.
Regards, Murray

Re: need serious help

I contrasted by using levels and some dodge 50% to clean up a bit. You can use the history brush to manually recover some lost detail.

Re: need serious help

Murray's suggestion sounds good to me - but converting to LAB sounds pointless?

Desaturate (or maybe black & white adjustment layer), Curves to increase contrast between background and text, and use dodge/burn (and maybe masks) to adjust specific areas.
