B&W photo to Color?? Can anyone help??

I am trying to get a black and white head shot into color! I have no idea how to do this without messing up the photo. I love the way it is but B&W photos are not really in like color are. This is for a theatrical audition so its very important to me!

Thank you,
Appreciate the help
Jenna

I'm sure there will be lots of helpful posts to come, but just to get you started:

Make a new layer, set that layer's blend mode to Color
Paint on the layer with a strong, saturated version of the color you want.
Lower the opacity of the layer and use curves or levels and hue/saturation to adjust the tone
Make another layer, set that layer's blend mode to Color
Choose the next color and paint
Repeat

This is the most basic way, and offers quite a bit of control. But there are many other ways (as you will hopefully soon see).

Sorry, I assumed you were working in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

if a sepia tone is acceptable, i'm sure one of the members here would do that for you...

there is no automatic way to do what you want. you basically have to 'colorize' the image. the way doug pointed out will also work in paint shop pro. there are other methods, too. here's one on the worth1000 web site: http://fx.worth1000.com/tutorials/16...ary-colorizing . that one is used by Vikki, one of the best colorizers on this site. there are other tutorials over there, as well.

also, go to the restoration forum here on this site and ask about colorizing. you'll likely get more help there, since we do lots of colorizations there. in fact, if you wish, i can move this thread over there. up to you
