A couple quickies from me

If you cannot get enough detail then a painting might work

Re: is it a total loss?

I'm sorry for your loss, 39 is really young.

No, not a total loss. Do you have any pictures of children from your family that bear a resemblance? Maybe you could copy their likeness(es) into this picture?

I think you best bet is to render and B/W from the red channel

my go

Re: is it a total loss?

Well on this second picture there just isn't enough information. I cropped and straightened the image
I used a curves adjustment layer and clicked auto which helped
I used Neat Image to decrease the grain.

I don't think this can be restored satisfactorily

Re: is it a total loss?

Lots of good tries here. I used the tree lights to figure that the blur was about a 45 degree angle and used smart sharpen. I rebuilt the red channel with the green.

Re: is it a total loss?

I used Smart Sharpen, the Distort filter (I'll do a tutorial about this one in a few days probably) and the Unsharp Mask filter to unblur the picture a little.
Next I used some curves to color correct the image (just measured the skin tone of the boy on the right).

Re: is it a total loss?

Hi, this is my attempt, I just tried to make it more readable, so, no artistic tries in it.
I sharpen the children a little, blurred the background, a little dodge and burn, a little paint,
reducing noise on the reds...+ color correction.

Re: is it a total loss?

hi. so sorry for your loss.
the first picture you`ve upload, could you have a first hand scanning, without touch it? mean original, as it is. some better resolution, 500-600 dpi?

Re: is it a total loss?

You could use http://www.mediafire.com/ for uploadings. This is not an images server, you can upload any kind of file, no matter the size, even some 20, 30, 30 Mb ones. So, you can scan and post a high resolution one. Work over a 70 kb low res picture is difficult.

Re: is it a total loss?

I worked on the re-scan 0f the second picture.
To minimize the lines, I used:
  • Filter>Video>De-Interlace
  • Filter>Blur>Motion Blur
My result after these procedures (Attachment 1)

Levels + Sharpening to finish ...

Nothing to write home about ... but at least you can see the faces a bit better

My final result (Attachment 2)

Re: is it a total loss?

I like Flora's result alot.

...and if Florin gets the mediafire full size image to work on, his too.
And that's without seeing it first!

Re: is it a total loss?

First I passed it through an FFT filter, then I worked on "colors".
I think a high resolution scan would help in recovering details.

Re: is it a total loss?

aartist,
thank you for your feedback!

jesterjeni,

glad I could help .... let me know if you need further help on this.

chillin,

great job! I also started out with FFT, but I found it a bit of a hassle, so I opted for the easier way out ...
