Cutting selection from photo

Hi all, what is the best way to cut people out of a photo and pasting them on to a new layer on photo shop. I have tried but find around the edges they become slightly straight lined and not blended in to the background.

that depends on the particulars but it seems that keeping the people on their own layers adding a mask (and not cut them) and paint or using channel to make your mask might be a nice solution. there is an example there how to use masks:
