Removing a Shadow

Hi everyone! So I was looking at an older post to remove shadows and I followed all the steps, but I can't seem to get it right! I think the part I'm stuck is the fill part. I am using a program called GIMP and the fill options are only to use pattern, background, or foreground. I want to do this myself please? Thank you for your help!

The method in that very old tutorial is destructive as it doesn't use layers.

If you have gotten to the step where you have the selection you need, I would create a new layer and use that selection as a mask for your brightening adjustment (fill it with grey if you follow the tutorial).

I'm afraid I cannot give detailed steps as I don't use GIMP.

In general what the tutorial shows is one way of brightening dark ("shadow") areas of the image. If your intent is to remove that unlucky shadow across your photo it will not work.
The tutorial is also outdated and not very good.

To remove that shadow across your image it will require a bit more manual work. You will have to select the shadow (by hand) and brighten it. You will probably have to do this in several steps, then selectively add back missing contrast and color.

Ahh I see! I tried following your steps instead of the old instructions and it works a lot better, but mine looks no where as good as yours. I guess I just need practice. Thank you!

The shadow is very dark & you will have to correct the texture, after you get rid of it.
