Help removing shadow?

I have this image from a friend and she wants the shadow removed from the background. I'm no expert at photo retouching and would appreciate any help I can get. I'm using photoshop CS 5.

Thanks!

Re: Help removing shadow?

Just a thought but I found the shadow added uniqueness. In other words, perhaps your friend could consider leaving it on?

Re: Help removing shadow?

Use the pen tool and outline the shadows and make it a selection and clone away the shadows.....isn't perfect but adequate..... I brightened the image some also.

I personally think a soft shadow around the girl would look more natural.

Re: Help removing shadow?

I agree with the other two posters that the shadow adds dimension to the little girl. Instead of having a bright background I choose to have the focus more on the little girl by highlighting her and darkening the surrounding background.

Re: Help removing shadow?

Just another idea combining the other suggestions and leaving a hint of shadow... using only basic tools, masking, and lots of practice

I like Carol B's, the way it highlights the eyes. Funny, I didn't notice the bracelet until I saw her darkened version.

Re: Help removing shadow?

OlBaldy's looks very nice also. On that version, the girl's lips for some reason look more natural. On the very original version, it almost looked as if the very young girl had lipstick on, a look I didn't particularly like.

It is probably unrelated but at one time I lived at the bottom of a mountain we called Old Baldy.
