hi kathleen--thanks for the kudos. actually, this photo hasn't been anywhere else. when I uploaded it I accidently chose the wrong file. It was actually my first attempt at colorizing a black and white photo. so thanks!

Amanda

'Was' meaning it's a historical piece and you've done several since? It IS nice. Only thing I'd add is some red to the cheeks, nose, ears, etc.

Akj, Nice job!!! I like the way you got the tones subdued, a little faded like time has a tendency to do but at the same time "fresh" enough to look natural. That contrast is great. Of course I'm no Art critic or expert but I know what I like and I like it!! Tom

Oh! Hey this is neat--how did my test image end up here?
Thanks for the comments everyone. To answer your question Doug, this is the first colorization I have done--haven't done any since but plan to do more.

The photo is actually of my dad. I have lots of old photos of him that I love to play and experiment with. The photo where I wanted to add a sky was of him also. He grew up on a farm with 8 older brothers and sisters so they took lots of pictures of him. Lucky me.

If you want to see the original also go to:

Amanda,

I saw it in test and asked Doug to put it where everyone could see it. He graciously sacrificed his birthday and moved it. Ha Ha Isn't he a sweetheart?

Excellent job for coloring something only once. It looks like it was color originally and that's what you are trying to achieve. You did it girl. We're proud of you!!!
DJ

PS Good lookin guy, your dad

Very impressive work on coloring. It looks 100% natural.
And what a nice way to honor your father!

Hi Everyone--thanks again for the comments. It's always nice to get feedback from others. This picture looked like a good place to start for me. Luckily the original was in good condition so that made the job easier. My dad lives in the middle of no-where in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I emailed the picture to him (actually to his wife who is much more computer-literate). His response was, "Hey! Who is that kid? I think I remember him from somewhere!"

That photo definitely captures the essence of my father. The current version is just as handsome, IMHO, but with a little less hair.

Amanda

P.S. Doug, does this mean I don't get to wish you Happy Birthday?

I love the job you did.The tweed jacket and background blend very well. What software are you using?

Thumbs down

Wonderful piece of work...I've seen so many colourisations that have been OTT and garrish - they don't improve even if you wear . The subtlety of the work is a credit to you.

Hi Paulette--I used Photoshop 6. I don't have any experience with any other image editing program. Photoshop is great I think--once you get over the huge learning curve--very expensive too but worth the price IMHO.

Hi edgeley--Thanks so much for your comments. And your first post to boot!

Amanda
