Thanks, Diane.
Here's a good source of coloring tutorials. There's about 3 different techniques here.

That coloring technique is unique, and some people find it difficult to do, but it does produce some excellent results if you can master it.
You surely have!!!!!

[QUOTE=Flora]Hi Diane,

  • Working on the BG Copy I created a 'Luminosity Mask'(Ctrl+Alt+~) and a 'Shadows Mask' (same procedure as for the 'Luminosity Mask' plus Ctrl+I to invert the Mask).
  • Set the blending for the 'Luminosity Mask' to 'Multiply' to increase the consistency,(adjusting the Opacity until satisfied).
  • Set the blending for the 'Shadows Mask' to 'Screen' to lighten the already dark parts of the image (hair etc.), (adjusting the Opacity until satisfied).
  • Created a new Empty Layer (blending=Overlay) and with a soft white brush, slightly highlighted his cheekbones and just above the bridge of his nose.

Hi Flora!

I could see the difference, despite things getting washed out a bit on the web... I've been trying to do the luminosity mask and shadows mask and am getting a bit stuck how to do both on one picture... Can you please break the steps down a little more? I use a Mac where for the luminosity mask it seems to be 'Command + alt, but I'm not sure I'm doing it right... Do you do each mask on its own layer??

Thank you so much for all your help!!
Diane

Hi again Flora,

I did a search on Retouch Pro and found some of your past notes where you explained the luminosity mask in more detail and gave the commands for us mac users (Command+option+~). I also came across what looks like a really great tutorial that you wrote: Enhancing Details in Unevenly Faded Pictures (11-03-2003). I haven't figured out yet how to make something into a link for everyone, but this looks very worthwhile!!

I should be able to do the luminosity mask from here..and hopefully also the Shadows mask...

Best regards,
Diane

I'm attaching my actual Profile anyway .... maybe you can see some other points I could try to change .....

Hi Diane,

Glad you found those links ....

....Here is how I created a 'Luminosity' and a 'Shadow' mask from the same Background Copy Layer:
  • Working on the BG Copy I created a 'Luminosity Mask'(Ctrl+Alt+~ ), {Mac=Cmd+Option+~} , and copied it on its own Layer (Ctrl+J ; Mac = Cmd+J)
  • Went back to (clicked on) the BG Copy and created a 'Shadows Mask' (same procedure as for the 'Luminosity Mask' plus Ctrl+I {Mac=Cmd+I} to invert the Mask), and copied it on its own Layer (Ctrl+J ; Mac = Cmd+J).

After this procedure I had 4 Layers:
  • Background,
  • Background Copy,
  • Shadow Mask,
  • Luminosity Mask.

That's when I changed the blendings for the two Masks....

Flora,
That looks alright, so it may be your proofing settings.

Thanks again Flora for being there!!

Well I think I finally got it, though on the web things do look washed out...

Here is my pic after the luminosity and shadows masks, plus some white highlights. These made a great difference and they didn't take much time at all once you learn how to use them!! Much easier than quick masking which I usually rely on heavily..

Thank you, thank you Flora!! A week ago it looked like I'd never get to this point..
