Painterly Plaid

What treatment gives a painterly effect to plaid and tones done that busy pattern? I have posted a full size image to work with here:

I use Painter 8 so if your suggestions could be done with that application in mind it would help. Thanks

If it was me (due to limited skills in Painter) I'd preprocess the image in Photoshop with actions and/or plugins (shown), then fine tune in Painter with Smudge-type (color source = clone source) or Grainy brushed from the Blender group.

Is this the kind of thing you had in mind? (The degree of artiness/painterly look can be varied as needed.)

Certainly has possibilities

This treatment has possibilities, however the issue with actions and filters for me is how the results are so global. I realize you can layer the effected piece and edit it according to taste. I think I would like to know how to do this effect with the brushes so I have more control over the results.

A point well taken. When you learn how to do that I'll be all ears on the ins and outs. That would be a powerful technique for the toolbox.

In the mean time if you could post the whole image (head along with shirt) w/o copyright or customer issues, I wouldn't mind taking a stab at it using PS and Painter.

permission not obtained

Sorry Danny, I don't have permission from this young man to do that. I would if I could for sure! Perhaps you should add a head as part of the project!
