Old, yellowed newspaper

I recently received a 55 year-old newspaper from a friend headlining the birth of Maine's first quintuplets. I would like to arrange copies of the articles and photos into an "album" presentation with minimum damage to the original. As far as the photos go, I will try scanning - flipping 180º - scanning again to reduce the moiré pattern (unless someone has a better idea of software that can be found). As for the yellowing, any recommendations or ideas? Thanks everyone and best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2005!

One way to explore is to convert the image to grayscale (to eliminate the color), then apply Levels or Curves adjustments to convert the (light yellow converted to light gray) tone closer to white.

I recently did a number of old news paper clippings from the 1930's and 1940's. Much like you suggest, I converted to B&W using a Channel Mixer and Curves adustment layer. I used Neat Image for Mac in the default setting to help eliminate the half-tone patterns in the photographs. It worked quite well. To help in some of the photos I used a empty layer with a soft light blending mode and used a soft black or white brush where appropriate.

I just fixed some with Levels...take the right eyedropper and click what should be white.
