How to attain this effect

I am new to the forum and look forward to also providing help. There are two ads ... I really like the effect and was wondering if anyone can figure them out. they are both different although I suspect that the approach is pretty similar.

If you scroll down to my post I mention an Illustrated look that I do. My examples all use the same method but have a different look depending on how much you overprocess the image. In your example, you could get the same look by overprocessing USM and Shadows/Highlights even more than what I did...then add noise. It also looks like Lucis Art plugin which gives the same effect and is instant (but it isn't free).

You might need to use something like Buzz's simplifer to get this basic look.

#1 looks like they ran highpass with a very high setting on a merged copy, then applied a blend mode (lighten or color dodge, I suspect).

I seem to remember you posted this link to an e-mail list, or someone else did. In case it wasn't you this is what I think:

Moschino Ad:
The photo was probably exposed & certainly lit to produce a very light skin tone (look at the amount of detail in the dark hair). PS can be used to remove colour, and/or saturation, and also can target a colour for lightening. But I feel pretty confident that on this image there wasn't far to go in that direction, from the original capture/film. Beyond that, it's a straight forward retouch, typical of any ad job.

Custo Ad:
This sort of edge effect can be introduced by some heavy USM, try settings around 150/40/10 - but as ever a lot depends on the size of the image. Try it on a new layer & use different blending modes, 'blend if' sliders & opacities to see how the effect can be blended into the image below. Often producing an effect like this can be messy to begin with, but can be refined a lot with multiple layers and masking off the bits you don't like. Same principle for the graphic shapes; new layer & blending modes.

I like the Moschino ad; simple, clean & effective. The Custo ad tries too hard, while the added graphics improve a fairly tame image, the edge effect doesn't really help the fussy detail of the clothes (yes, I know nobody was asking for my opinion)
