16-bit vs. layers

I'm sure this has been discussed before. I've seen some posts about the benefits of using 16-bit images. But, I've also heard people strongly advocate the use of adjustment layers. Well this is not possible for those of use still using PS7. My question is, what did you do before PS CS?? If I have to choose between 16-bit and adjustment layers, which is it? Or, what functions should absolutelty be done in 16-bit (before I convert) and which are okay to do in 8-bit? I use both RAW and scanned images. Just trying to figure out the best workflow w/ the resources I have. Thanks.

Apples vs. oranges. One is a quality input issue, one is a non-destructive workflow issue.

But if you're using Raw, you really need CS2 for the ultimate in both. CS2 has Raw v3, full 16bit support, and SmartObjects which let you keep the best input quality with a non-destructive workflow.

16 bit files may help some files, but for the most part there has been no conclusive evidence that they are any better than 8 bit files, outside of theory. Personally, I would never use a 16 bit file (Uhm I did and it really did nothing) again, until a client would tell me to!

God Bless,
