colour problem in Photoshop CS

Hiya,

this one is really annoying my m8 and I'm not sure what it is. I'll explain best I can

He is running Photoshop CS (v.8).

He has a .gif with a transparent background. When he opens it in Photoshop the colours look washed out/pale. When he opens it in irfanview it looks ok.

When I open it in Photoshop CS2 it looks ok.

The gif is an avatar

You can see the actual gif http://davlam.f2s.com/picman/images/dave/Fry2.gif

his comparison screenie is http://davlam.f2s.com/picman/images/dave/ps.png

showing what he sees in Photoshop and in irfanview. Also he shows an image with the view when he opens the 'open file' option in Photoshop.

now going on the basis that i can see it fine in CS2 i have given him my colour settings and he has applied them but the problem still exists.

Is this anything to do with CS and indexed colour ?

I don't know.

Can anyone help.

cheers

oops !!!

i think he might have sussed it.

He tells me he had proof colours selected (view>proof colors). He unticked that option and it seems to have restored more vibrant colours.

I have never used this option for anything so i didn't even consider it.

Even though it is unticked if he changes the proof colors from eg cmy to cmyk there is a difference (obviously).

We'll see.

Sorry if the post turns out to be a bum steer.

thanks for looking ..

cheers
