Gradient tool generates stripes

Hello all,
I'm designing a wedding album. One nice effect is a gradient where a photo gets more and more pallid. I do this with a layer mask and a gradient from black to white or from black to transparent.

Unfortunately the transition for e.g. black to white is not smooth, one can see stripes with steps of black becoming lighter. This can be seen on the printout of my fineartprinter too. I use the format 30cmx60cm 300dpi.

How can the gradient be created with a more continous transition from e.g. black to white.

Many thanks in advance.
Stefan

The "stripes" you see is called banding.

add a small amount of noise to your layer mask, this will help ease the banding.
