I have been using an Epson R2400 printer to print a number of photos on Epson Velvet Fine Art paper. Each is stored in a polyester sleeve and should thus last a long time. (They are intended as gifts for my two children.)

I would like to print caption information on the reverse side of each photo (which is the uncoated side).

Does anyone see a potential problem with this approach?

JMHO... If these are meant as gifts to your children, I would suggest a hand written note on the back instead of a computer generated one. Much more personal and something of a keepsake for years ahead.

It should not be an issue. However, I would recommend that you do the backside printing 1st and then examine the front side prior to printing to be sure that there are no ink deposits on it. Some printers overspray and leave ink on the guides or baseplates. For most printers this will not be a concern.

Yes there are big problems with printing on the back side of photo paper in my experience. The ink will take hours to dry and any movement of the paper will allow the ink to run. If you want to print on both sides of photo paper get paper that is treated on both sides for printing , I know it is available in glossy finish but I don't know about mate. Even with double sided paper try printing your text on back first then the photo because the paper rollers sometimes leave marks. I don't know if this will work I have not tried it myself , just accidentally put the paper in wrong on a few occasions and noticed that sometimes the rollers leave faint marks.

Print the info in very light grey or light % of color.
Like 20% black only or so. This makes it very pro looking.

hi,
these are my thoughts...

1. first, doing alittle research on the paper your using, I came across a nice review of the paper, it was surprising because it really difficult to find good good reviews... they said paper great but the printing needs to dry well before any major handling, not a few minutes but they were saying a few hours....

2. I don't see no problems with printing on the back of the picture, I have done this many times with all sort of different kinds of paper and never had any problems except with regular typing paper... regular typing paper will absorb the ink and cause blurriness and maybe bleed thru... otherwise your ink jet papers and coated papers I never had any problems with text and pictures being on both sides.... and since your using a nice heavy gagecoated sided paper that shouldn't be a problem...

3. you may want to consider the font size.... if this is a keepsake...small print may get a little blurry over time (because ink spread or rubbing, etc) a larger font size even if blurriness occurs will still be quite readable...
4. I would definitely do the text printing first!!! before printing the picture... you don't won't that nice printed picture to being track over with those printer rollers.. smile.. especially if it turns out the picture not dry enough yet...grrr....

Now I have my work cut out for me.

Ultimately, my two kids will appreciate the effort (I think).
