Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 white haze With these results, any workflow is out of the question....Slides have to be loaded manually, and each individually adjusted... As said before, if i turn off all the digital ice features, it still hazes, but not as much. Am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the scanner. I've also heard people experiencing this with the Minolta dimage line. I've scanned these slides on my Epson V700 and there is no hazing, but the grain reduction is not as good as the Nikon, even though both scanners have digital ice. This does not appear on any negative film, only positive slides. Its seems to be bleeding bright areas. Its not the flash either, because this appears one images that are taken outside but not as much as indoor shots. (from left to right \ top to bottom) 1.jpg -> Bleeding on the heads of people and on the steel extremities of the vehicle 2.jpg -> No bleeding or bleed distortion (as contract) 4.jpg -> Hazing is present on both persons, the lower right, sitting down, and the upper left standing next to the cabinet. 5.jpg -> Hazing and distortion across vertical center of photograph. 9.jpg -> People are hazing, cabinets are hazing and even the wall is hazing onto the people and cabinets, vertically.... Any solutions, settings ? I am using the nikon scan 4 software. I also have capture nx2, photoshop cs3, sho, gem, roc plugins, noiseware, etc. Last edited by jmn; 07-19-2008 at 12:43 AM.

Re: Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 white haze Jmn, I don't think there is anything wrong with the scanner. The problem appears to be in the blue channel which is often the first to deteriorate in old slides. You may also have a film (no pun intended) / residue on the surface of the slide. If you did not clean the slide before scanning it, you might try dipping one in Isopropyl Alcohol >90%. Your V700 scanner probably does not pick up the damage because it is a flat bed scanner with an attachment whereas the Nikon is specifically designed for slides and negatives. Regards, Murray

Re: Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 white haze Blue channel degradation.....well, the slides are yellow and old 1975-1988. I will find some 90+ Isopropyl Alcohol....probably have to look around since most are ~70 in the usa. Some forums speak of the problems with cyan. http://www.lexa.ru/FS/msg24744.html http://www.nabble.com/white-LED-vs-C....html#a3765885 http://www.trainorders.com/discussio....php?9,1341432 (last post) http://groups.google.com/group/comp....5f6b6b7808c353 http://photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/0082dN http://www.vad1.com/photo/dirty-scanner/ (very close to what I have) http://photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/00CTcF http://photo.net/digital-darkroom-forum/00HCnM http://www.trainorders.com/discussio....php?9,1341432 So, its hard to say..... The machine is only a 1-2 months old, but it showed this straight out of the box. Last edited by jmn; 07-19-2008 at 11:08 AM.
