abbrev. thesrs... or What are you talking about?

For the short time I've been here I have noticed an interesting phenomenon, the amount of terminology and abbreviation among pro's and semi-pros is quite staggering. I myself, whilst not quite a noob at photoshop or photography, am having quite some trouble with some (read many) of the abbreviations.

That's why I came up with the idea of this thread.

What I am asking for is for you pro's, semi-pro's and advanced beginners to post your abbreviations and terminology here with a short explanation so that people who aren't quite familiar with the lingo might go here and easily find out what someone else is saying. I know that this might seem an onerous task but just imagine the time you will save not having to explain something to a noob for the umpteenth time, it might also cut back on some of the aggravation some might feel when treated like an imbecile just because they don't know the right words.

If you think this is a good idea then please browse whatever posts might be here and post your own, the browsing is to minimize the amount of duplicate entries.

Should this be a huge success I or someone else might even compile it into a pdf available for download.

it's so much easier to sing along when you know the words, right?
_____________________________________________________________________

It appears that this actually was a good idea and I would like to thank Swampy, MisterMonday, William Wilson and Igot2pman for todays harvest.
I will do my best to post and harvest every day but with the busy part of the year coming up I make no promises to that affect, but at least once a week

oh well. here we go.

PST = Pattern Stamp Tool
AHB = Art History Brush
AL = Adjustment Layer
DUPE = Duplicate layer
HSB = Hue/Saturation/Brightnes adjustment

D&B = Dodge and Burn
acv = curve
atn = action
abr = brush

BTS = behind the scenes
SP = Soft proofing

DOF = Depth of Field
CGI = Computer generated image/ry (editors note)

AF = auto focus
(BFL = big friendly lens)

USM = Un Sharp mask
Aniso = Anisotropic ( in ps stylize > diffuse > check anisotropic )

WIP = Work In Progress
WF = Work Flow

CMYK = cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black), scale used by most Printing companies and
newspapers.
RGB = Red Green Blue - used on most screens and basic colorscheme for photography

DPI = Dots per Inch

LPI = Lines per Inch

S/H - Shadow/Highlight
HP - Hi-Pass
IS - Image Size

HDR - High Dynamic Range
SAP - Stand Alone Program
SAA - Stand Alone Application

Re: abbrev. thesrs... or What are you talking abou

DXM, this is a good idea but only if someone commits to collate all the inputs and roll them into a single list or table or pdf file. This thread may become very long as the inputs come in. Later having to look through pages of forum thread to weed out what you are looking for may become less effective than doing a Goole search.
Regards, Murray
D&B = Dodge and Burn
acv = curve
atn = action
abr = brush

.... More later

thank you for the kind words and for leading by example, with some effort this might actually become something useful.

Re: abbrev. thesrs... or What are you talking abou

A couple more i have thought of although they might seem obvious to regular users newbies sometimes find them weird at first

USM = Un Sharp mask

Aniso = Anisotropic ( in ps stylize > diffuse > check anisotropic )

and another thought it would be handy to have a list like this for ps shortcuts

Palms

Re: abbrev. thesrs... or What are you talking abou

My contribution:

DPI = Dots per Inch
LPI = Lines per Inch

Incidentally, as the list grows it would be helpful if it were in alphabetical order. In any case, thanks for the effort.

I highly doubt it.

Consider the fact that this might in time actually become quite large and hopefully helpful collection of "shop talk" abbreviations and terminology, in such a case would you want to be remembered as the class clown or a valued contributor?
