How to tell what year a photo was taken...

Awhile ago I came across a post about a website where you could get an idea of what year a photo was taken based on the clothing worn. Can anyone help me with this. Also is there a site where I can find out the approximate year of a photo based on the added design around the photo?

These photos are from the UK. Do you think the US clothing of the day would be very similar? This may very well be the site I had come across but it was at least one year ago so I can't be positive. If I do find another I will be sure to post. I have an aunt who died at 99 who had a bunch of very old photos.

That is an excellent website also. Thanks for posting it.
US clothing followed Europe fairly closely. However, different areas of the US changed more slowly just as they do today. So, if you know the basic geographical area your family was living in, you can add years accordingly. During the late 1800's, the northeast, mid-atlantic and parts of the south (i.e. Atlanta) would be close to Europe. As you move further south and west, there can be as much as 5 years difference. After about 1920 the difference diminished, except for the more rural and indigent areas.
