IrfanView? http://www.irfanview.com/ is able to read Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Olympus, Fuji, Kodak, Sony, Pentax (CRW/CR2, NEF, MRW, ORF, RAF, DCR, SRF, PEF, X3F) RAW formats, and "classical" RAW files (using a plug-in, but you can get those on the IV site, plug-ins page)... w/ irfan you can easily batch convert images using File->"Batch Conversion/Rename"... very simple and effective... and for free

Conversion script If you want to do this within PSCS there's a great script available from Russell Brown. It will work on a folder, or flagged/selected images in the browser. It can build PSD, TIFF & JPEG (at the same time), each to a size & sharpnes of your choice & even convert the JPEGs to sRGB. A helpful movies explains it all: http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html Don't be put off by the 'quirky' presentation - Russell Brown's from Adobe & this script should be supplied with PS!

If one is just converting .raw to .jpg and assuming Photoshop CS (or later) why couldn't one write an action and invoke it via the Automate > Batch dialog. That would suffice in this situation, wouldn't it? Under these circumstances what would be the value add of ReaConverter?

Danny - You can't use an action to invoke the PS Raw converter, but Russell Browns script is great (and Free). The Bridge will allow you to adjust and save mutiple files on it's own anyway but Russell Brown's script lets you do a bit more as well. Christine

paint shop pro (psp) has a built in batch converter and handles at least 40 file types. but, i'd go with irfanview if you dont already own psp. irfanview has been around for a while and is a very respected viewer/converter. Craig

Thank you so much... I just wanted to thank everyone that has contributed to this thread for supplying the information about converting RAW images to .jpg I already had IrfanView installed and within a matter of minutes I had all of my RAW images converted and up on my website picture gallery. I was finally able to capture some cool lightning strikes last night for the first time and being new to RAW pictures didn't even think about the fact that I would need a different picture viewer or need to convert anything. I started searching the web right away and found this thread right off. Anyhow, thank you all very much, I belong to a number of forums and so far this has been the most helpful. If you would like to take a look at the images you can view them here

Works especially well if you want to throw some extra steps into the action (ie change to black and white, or auto levels or something), which you can't do with one of the other scripts. I tend to go through all the raw files making adjustments and holding down Alt to be able to Update the file without opening, and when I've finished I set it batch processing and make a cup of tea while it applies all my changes and adds me extra layers. | decaldude, you're welcome. and welcome to RP! took a look at your lightning gallery. very nice. those negative images are quite interesting. and yes, taking shots of lightning can be tricky, or at least it was when i was using my old Canon F1 SLR. not sure how the digitals work with it, but at least you can preview almost instantly and make adjustments. i tried taking some on film about 35 years ago with only moderate success. gotta get the right film speed, shutter speed and so on and hardly any way to test for lighting since every flash of lightning is different and short-lived. so, well done on some great images! | Hi Craig, Thank you, I am using a Canon Rebel and yes it did take me some time to get the settings just right, I'm new, but fast to learn. Also, I had to move from AF to MF because the camera will not take a picture if it doesn't think there is anything to take a picture of.....lol One of the hardest parts was trying to focus on something that was there for less than 1 second in most cases. As it turns out some of my pictures were just dumb luck, (of course), but I missed more shots from getting tired of holding the camera up. I was so happy to get my first true lightning shots, I live in Arizona and we get lightning many times a year but right now we are in prime season. The storm that I shot was here for two hours only dropped 10 raindrops on me and then it was gone. Well thank you again, this is going to be a place that I visit and post often. Have a Great Day!!! it's been quite a while since i tried what i tried, but i seem to recall reading something about taking pics of lightning. the first thing you want is a tripod another gentleman had some great panoramic images of lightning storms. these were across a cityscape and comprised several shots pinned together to give the panorama. i dont recall if he was using several cameras all at once, or simply rotated the camera for each frame. these were also quiet dramatic. i wish i could recall more detail of what they did to get those shots, but i'm also fairly sure you can find books or web sites that would explain exposures and film types for these. i seem to recall using a 400 asa film, black and white, with the shutter speed down to 1 second or more. but that was when filming at night, which in my opinion, gives the more dramatic shots. you might also post one of those pictures in the mini-challenge area of the photo art forums. i can already think of a few good ideas to do with them Craig |
