printing art work and original image size

i would appreciate advice on required image sizes for printing

presumably when using photo art actions on photo material the result is as good as the original file was and possible printing sizes will correspond

however, with plug-ins like impressionist or actions like mike finn's slap dash 5 you can enlarge your basic canvas to whatever size you want the finished product to be printed at

or am i dead wrong in my assumptions ?

Wrong, but not dead wrong...

You can't just enlarge unlimited - 200 x 400 to 2000 x 4000 is going to look slightly bad.

I'd suggest a maximum of double res, 1.5 if possible. 1000 to 2000, or 1500 tro 2000,would still save heaps of time in Impressionist/Photoshop.

Don't foget that Dpi matters too - 400 x 800 @ 600dpi is a huge file, 2000 x 4000 @ 72 dpi is not huge.

I work on 180 dpi for prints up to 8 inch x 10 inch (painterly stuff, not photos), and 300 dpi for bigger. I work on somewhere around 1600 x ??? then double it to 3200 x ???? before printing (no inkjet, I goto a photolab for printing).
