One of my first attempts with Impressionist

This isn't my first but I think it is the best one so far. I didn't write down which filter it was that I used, slaps wrist, cause I like the way it turned out.

Its a pic of a shovelnose shark which I took in about 15m of water. To me though the way it turned out you would think it was on top of the water.

Enjoy. The one on the left is the original.

Excellent... Really like how the BG turned out. Nice job, too, on masking/coloring the shark.

re: I didn't write down which filter it was that I used
Been there, done that about 1K times.

I'm pretty good about keeping track, now. It drives me nuts when I'm unable to reproduce an effect I really like.

Re: One of my first attempts with Impressionist

Thanks DannyRaphael

I can remember what i did to mask the BG but not the filter. It is a matter of, like you say, writing down the filter or saving the filter. I did this before reading through your threads.

The shark itself is on its own layer and I did a levels correction on it. On my comp it looks a little dark, but I like it.

Re: One of my first attempts with Impressionist

I've been playing again. This time I actually saved my filter, YAY.

I started out by following this post

I would like to put a shadow behind the flower to give it a 3d effect but I can't for the life of me work out a way to do it. Could someone please help me put a shadow behind the flower?

Thanks.

The first 2 pics are the originals from which I got the third picture.

Re: One of my first attempts with Impressionist

Select your flower, duplicate on a new layer, fill with black. Move below original flower. Run Gaus-Blur and lower opacity. Use free transform if you want to reshape the shadow.

It is very seldome that I use Photoshop's drop shadow style, I feel I have more control using this simple method.

Re: One of my first attempts with Impressionist

Thanks Swampy. I used your technique on the flower and it worked no problems.

I did have a problem with my original psd file so I started again and this is what I came up with. I reckon it is a much better picture.

I used the same pics and settings but it turned out totally different.

Re: One of my first attempts with Impressionist

It's a shame they didn't make it for MAC gholmes1936, is there any way you can use it, through an emulator or something?

This really is a fun program.

I have been doing other stuff, combining the impessionist software with other techniques, check my creations out here

Thanks for the input. Hate to admit this but I cannot figure out how you used the water image with the flower image. Other than it's palette. Are you willing to tell us your secret?

Re: One of my first attempts with Impressionist

Sometimes I really blow myself away with the things I do. This picture is a combination of photoshop filters and an Impressionist filter.

The rocks were done with the Coloured pencil filter in photoshop and a hide all layer mask painted with white @ 50% opacity.

The water was done with a slightly modified heavy embossed impressionist filter,

Brush Size: 64%
Coverage: 100%
Pressure: 140

I also ran the liqify filter on the water to give it a bit of oomph

The sky was put on a layer by itself and had the Sumi-e filter put over the top.

Check the Bay Of Fires here
