Danny
This is probably THE best tutorial I've ever followed! Easy and works too! I got a little lost with what layers were where in the middle, but Step 19 sorted all that!
I've added my effort. Only one more step, I added a Gaussian Blurred Stroke round the edge, purely because I'm not a huge fan of the "non-border" (does that make sense?!) you get on most digital images.
Thanks - I look forward to trying more - both new tuts and this one on other pics. If I'm happy with 'em, I'll post 'em here!

I know what you mean. I too prefer specific instructions whenever possible. Once you get a recipe nailed, you can then start tweaking the steps to your liking, just like making a cake!
Speaking of cake-n-frosting... last Friday I had a piece of the best choc. decadence cake I've ever had. [Dinner honoring my wife's bday.] It was simply awesome.
Thx, too, for the very nice PM. I wish the same for you and yours.

You're on your way! Once you start getting used to how layers can be blended and how to manipulate line characteristics, you'll leap to another level.
Regarding borders and your own custom touches: I'm all in favor. Glad to see you're already stepping outside the box.
It's feedback like yours and June's that inspires me and I really appreciate it. After we get past the holiday season I plan on writing a few more of these step by step tutorials.
Thanks for sharing your efforts and to both of you for the kind words.
~Danny~
P.S. to Phyllis.
I really did mean to mention that it was your inspiration (insistence? nagging? pleading? ) that finally led me to try PS7's STYLIZE > DIFFUSE > ANISOTROPIC filter. You were really right on that one! |

| | | Let me add my thanks AS a newbie to this forum I can only add my thanks for a well written and excellently documented tutorial. As an industrial designer, there are many times that I have to "re-interprete" our 3D models and renders to a comprehensible line form. You've helped greatly in that task.
Thanks again

| | | Great Tutorial...Thanks!
I used the basic techniques but to the Smart Blur layer I used an opaque white brush to delete the background detail, and then ran a Distort->Diffuse->Anisotropic filter to blur and blend the lines in the sketch. (I did not use crosshatch or angled strokes)
I then copied the background and ran a moderate gausian blur to soften the colors in the leaves only.
I made a copy of the blur layer and added a mask for the leaves so they would not be affected by the next two steps. A little more agressive blur on the photo and application of the Artistic->Sponge filter for texture. (Be sure to apply these to the photo, no the mask).

So far I'm having fun with your tutorial. However, what exactly is the anisotropic effect? When I use STYLIZE > DIFFUSE I get three options in PS6, Normal, Lighten Only, and Darken Only. Am I missing something? |

| | | Hmmmmm, I'm thinking perhaps anisotropic effect is only available in PS7. I really like the look of that--bummer! Anyway, here is my stab at it. I really liked this tutorial Danny. Is 02 out there somewhere? I added some new layers on top , filled with a color and then changed to color mode. I then created a layer mask for each color (hide all) and then used a white brush to reveal the areas that I wanted to color. I also changed the opacity of each layer to control the intensity of the colors. Hope that all makes sense. |

Correct. This option was introduced in PS7. You can get in the ballpark by applying a little Gaussian Blur followed by some Unsharp Mask.
re: Is 02 out there somewhere?
Sure is (and more).
* Open the attachment (you'l need these settings)
* Click Search above and choose "advanced search"
* Populate the search fields according to the attachment
re: I added some new layers on top...
Excellent.
Getting creative with tutorials is awesome. Glad you're "coloring outside the lines." That's how you grow.
Keep it up!

| | Thanks Danny. I didn't have much luck with the search feature. (i never do for some reason) but was able to find your other tutorials by looking back a few pages in the forum. I really wish I didn't have to go to work tomorrow. It seems like every weekend I learn all this new stuff and then Monday comes and I never get a chance to let it sink in my head. |
