Okay. Now that I understand, here is why I was so confused by your remark. Having been a third grade teacher for twelve years as well as a mom, I can say from my vast experience with kids' paintings that their strokes tend to be wide, simple and straight, about as far from fine and swirly as you can get. But maybe you knew a swirly kid...hmmm...did the Van Gogh kids go to your school maybe?

Anyway, just to illustrate my point (certainly not meant as a serious submission to this challenge) here is a quick rendition of what a typical kids' painting of a rose would probably look like, done in good old school supplied "poster paint" of course. (And regardless of what the jar says, the stuff does NOT wash off easily with soap and water!)

Hmmm, I never was THAT good!

I couldn't then, and cannot now, control where my strokes go; they weren't straight, and I think "swirly" is too nice a term to describe them -- perhaps "free" ...

The jpeg artifacts in the dark background jumped out screaming when I applied the IP Process adaptive equalization filter, and with the addition of Flaming Pear's lacquer filter they gave the pic a stamped metal look.

Weird, I know, but I just can't help liking it. The shiny little bumps and knobs seem to have a purpose, as if they can control the actions of the rose, which was plugged into the board from a separate layer treated with FP lacquer on different settings.

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so it's up to you to decide how you like this one.

well, being a techno geek, I definitely have to say !! that's a really different effect, but it actually works really well, it's a cool look.

There was a rattling in my mouse, I shook it a few times and this fell out on to the screen.
It was the only way to get rid of it.

Thank you! Not hard at all. I just traced the different layers I wanted with the pen tool - not being too precise. I made each shape a different color fill layer with the shape as a vector mask. Then I just made each layer's layer style a single pixel drop shadow. Textured the layers and to make it look like artsy paper, I used Impressionist faded to a lower opacity on each layer.


Now I'm playing with AlienSkin Snap Art demo.

Thanks for the compliment. I used a technique from the Photoshop Photo Effects Cookbook. I cut the rose out of the pic, duped it a couple of times. Then I desaturated one layer and applied the find edges filter. I then worked on that layer to make the edges better and deleted the white in the layer. Next, I ran the cutout filter on the color rose layer and cleaned it up so the colors were right. I added an oval selection on a new layer and stroked the selection. I added a new layer underneath the color rose layer and used the oval to make a selection and filled it with yellow. Using the technique from the book, I used the glass filter on this and the color rose layer. I merged these two layers and used the lighting effects filter with the source in the upper left. I combined the "edges" and oval layers and added a emboss and bevel as well as a slight drop shadow style. I added the "extra" leading with a 3 pixel brush. I use a mouse so sometimes I can't get the curves the way I wanted them, but I guess they look alright. Finally I added a new layer below all these and filled it with black.
