FIRST MINI-CHALLENGE -or- NEW TO PHOTO-ART?

New guidelines (subject to fine tuning):
* For each mini-challenge, post up to two (2) interpretations with attached images of your interpretation(s). ## SEE BELOW.

* For each include enough step-by-step detail to give someone a reasonable chance to recreate (or approximate) your results. That way all of us can learn from each other. Obviously it’s impossible to explain things like “individual brush strokes,” but do include such details as filters used, plugins used, blend mode detail, etc.

* Preferred format:

* Compliment works you truly admire. Don't feel compelled to comment on (or feel guilty about not commenting on) every single image.


## If you would like to do more interpretations, here’s how to do that:
- Post them at a public site, such as www.pbase.com and include as many links IN A SINGLE POST as you would like.
- If you create subsequent versions and want to include them, you can edit your own posts to add/change/delete links to outside galleries. It's not necessary to add additional posts to the thread for each link to a gallery site.

Several months ago Lawrence Debono wrote an action that I really liked. CLICK HERE to be taken to the post where this action can be downloaded.

The only modification I made was to blur some of the lines in the sky in the Edges layer.

Hey all,

A beautiful picture Danny. I apologize for not being extremely accurate with my description but when I work it's always a lot of experimentation. The filters I used were paint engine, amphisoft simplifier & convolution shaman, Nik sunshine & skylight.

Ran levels with the intentions of capturing as much color as possible.

Utilizing masks I painted in sunshine/skylight to portions of image to enhance color and then ran amphisoft convolution to sharpen. I did this to get good edges for any paint program I would possibly run later.

Ran simplifier and adjusted to get the detail for the water and building I was after. Painted out sky and clouds with mask.

I used paint engine on the sky only. Applied the texture several times using a mask and painting.

Ran Nik skylight to further enhance colors.

Used multiply blend mode on finished picture and merged.

I used Photoshop 7 and a Wacom tablet.

Danny--that's a nice action you used. I've added it to my collection. BTW--I'm having fun with the action your used in your vietnam post--it has much wider use than you claimed for it.

LQQKER--The lack of color in the water worked well to emphasize the buildings and boats.

PM--has the mauler touch for sure.

I tried all my usual stuff and what came out was nice--but my usual stuff.

This was simple once I hit on the combo.

1. Make 2 duplicate layers from the background.
2. On the lower layer, use fantastic machine's paint engine with the Leroy setting. (free) http://www.fantasticmachines.com/demo_downloads.htm
3. On the upper duplicate, I used DC special's outliner4 on the color book setting. (free) and set the blending mode to soft light. http://www.bmath.net/new/prvw.htm
4. Added a pattern fill layer in soft light blending mode, opacity 70% to give it a little texture.

Hmmm. This is a great original. hard to conceive of posting anything that is even remotely as good...really I'm inclined to let it flow right on by as something that should stand alone - unmodifed.

But - I need to increase my involvement in the challenge area - so...

...for my attempt - I am going to try to be as faithful to the intent and mood of the original as possible. I am just going to mess a little with the colors and exposure - to create a "slightly" different mood - while retaining as much of the great stuff in the original as possible...

1. Channel mixer - reverse blue and red
2. Curves to darken the sky - saturate the "red" of the gondolas
3. Smart blur
4. USM 3 pixels - 46%
5. Curves to taste on whole image
6. Auto levels on pic (go figure) - brown to gold - fade to 52%
7. Diffuse - Darken only - Exclusion mode - fade to 24%
8. Contrast +7
9. Enough already - Stop messing with great photo.

5. Select> Color Range (select grey, light grey areas) Edit>Fill>White

Danny, very beautiful picture to work it. and all the entries followed by your touch are very good. This time also I distorted the picture . I saw this one with a fish eye. so it has become like that.

In my other challenge I was't droop my descriptions along with that because I thought it was femilier to every one. but Danny asked to post descriptions for the forum interest and I followed..
Here also I should do the same.
for the Tunnel view it is in the duplicate layer used Filter>Distort>Polar co->rectangular to polar.
As usual.

And Jill, very nice work but it is small in size and much white areas killed the interest.Your descriptions are very clear and I think I can do an experiment..thank you jill..

Here is my another one . this time i did it in the duplicate layer applied curves for Red, Green and Blue seperately for bringing the tones and applied Filter >Artistic > Paint dub and it is like that.

Been away for a bit then server was down. Now to try my hand at the pic.

1. Dup BG twice.
2. First dup I ran; find edges, then
desaturated, opacity of 63%.
3. Second dup; overlay blend mode.
4. Flattened and saved for web.

A half inverted version.....

Worked on duplicate layer selected upper part of the picture and inverted it. Did levels for that particular colour and selected lower part and again did levels to balance the colour in unuform.

Then applied Filter > Artistic > Sponge.....

maybe not exactly Monet, but you're not the only one who like the effect - good one! i like your sky much, you didn't kill those fabulous colors and that's plus for you!

I'm still trying to decide how I want to approach my wc technique; it's all in the gradient transistions (haven't been happy with mine yet). I'm finding oil is actually easier for me to do.

Thanks, Ikroll. Yes, I used one of my own styles, Vinson 4, although I did another with Matisse that I thought worked quite well. It's a great photo to work on.

Tried for an oil painting look. Did some HSV adjustments and lighting effects, then removed the thing that looked like a construction crane and some other "junk" in Photoshop. Did the rest in Painter IX.

My try at this one. Overlaid the original onto a dithered version. Feathered the edges.
