Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

Hello,

Here is a little something. I included the layers. I also did a surface blur on the different channels in Photoshop, too smooth out the photo. I come from a photography background, but liked trains as a kid.

Thanks for the try.

all the other layers are outlined as the layer names

Ryan

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

Ryan- welcome to RetouchPro! Thank you for the layer screenshot!

Smada- nice job! I haven't seen a Challenge Photo posted in this sub-forum in awhile.
If you look in the main Photo Art Forum, you'll see several different sections.

*First is the section listing all of the sub-forums (Photo Art Mini Challenges through Photo Art 101).
*The second section (Threads in the Forum) divides into 2 parts. The first part is a list of sticky threads that are always at the top. The second part is what you really want to look at. It lists all the current threads as people post. Often you will see them titled Creative Interpretations, but not always. Almost all of them will have a photo posted that anyone can play around with.
Feel free to play with the photos in the Challenges section too. There probably won't be any new ones anytime soon though.

Hope that all makes sense.

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

I think I get it. I've used these posting on other forums. Well I was nice to do a little relaxing PS work for a bit, But I'm off to Idaho, and Utah for a couple of days. That Work Thing just keeps dragging me down. The fun PS work just doesn't pay my bills yet, but maybe someday with all your help and suggestions.

Thanks

Ryan

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

Being new wanted to give this a try. Still pretty green but having a lot of fun.

First pic is with Photoshop CS3 and mostly using Color Efex Pro - Old Photo setting using it as a brush.

Second one is oil setting brushes using GMX Photopainter, pretty simple program for people getting started in photo art and wanting to see results pretty quickly.

tks

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

Thanks Palm, it is fun and so interesting. For me really makes digital photography a whole new world. Will be especially nice once i get the giclee printer setup going.
GMX Photopainter is from Gertrudis Graphics. Relatively inexpensive and very easy for beginners seems like it can do a lot as well for the more experienced.

ciao

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

I've been gone for months, lost access to Photoshop, using GIMP now. So far so good.

I have PS7 PPC. I bought a Mac Mini Intel. PS7 does not work with Leopard.

So I will be back to post my choo choo image.

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

All I did was erase what didn't look like a train. Pasted as a floating layer over image, then touched up by erasing as much as possible. Flattened image, and resized.

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

Here is my workflow:

1. Duplicate background layer.
2. On dupe layer: Filter>Artistic>Dry Brush - 4/2/1
H&S +30% saturation.
3. Duplicate Background Layer, name it Lines, put at the top of layer stack
Filter>Blur>Smart Blur R-100, T-97.5, Quality-High, Edge Only
4. Invert this image, then apply Filter>Diffuse>Anisotropic
5. On this layer, remove any unwanted lines with a hard-edged white brush.
6. On the Lines Layer add a mask. On this mask paint with a black water
color brush starting at 20% opacity and build up density. Vary brush tip
and brush size.
7. When you are satisfied with the result, Merge Visible.
8. With a smudge brush ( I used a Trimoon smudge Brush) at 50-70 opacity
go over the watercolor brush strokes at the edge of canvas to get the
capillary action effect.
9. Filter>Texturizer>Sandstone Texture

Re: PHOTO ART: Mini-challenge #140 – Steam Engine

You nailed it. That's what I was thinking about too. The subject may not have been the best for what I did, but I was counting on people not looking too close, especially people who knows trains. I had to take liberties by removing some parts. The brace in front of the boiler didn't come out as well as it should have. It might have worked better with it positioned over a darker section of the sky. Still, it was fun taking part.
