Here’s another “mini-challenge” to play with in the Photo-based Art category until the next major challenge is posted here.

We haven't done anything nautical of late, so let's take this one for a spin(naker).

FIRST MINI-CHALLENGE -or- NEW TO PHOTO-ART?

New guidelines (subject to fine tuning):
* For each mini-challenge, post up to two (2) interpretations with attached images of your interpretation(s). ## SEE BELOW.

* For each include enough step-by-step detail to give someone a reasonable chance to recreate (or approximate) your results. That way all of us can learn from each other. Obviously it’s impossible to explain things like “individual brush strokes,” but do include such details as filters used, plugins used, blend mode detail, etc.

* Preferred format:

Danny--Thanks for taking the time to find a challenge image.

Oscar--That's one of my favorite looks too. I think it suited this image.

Don--Your variation of the crosshatch worked very well. The colors you chose suit the effect.

I'm looking for a rougher style. This is my latest exploration--not widely tested.

Rough sketch 1

1. 2 duplicate copies of background. Turn the top one off (it’s used at the end and it’s convenient to have it already at the top).

We work on the middle layer for a while.

2. Image—Adjustments—Desaturate
3. Duplicate desaturated layer.
4. On the duplicate layer set the blending mode to Color Dodge. Run Filter—Blur—Gaussian Blur between 4-8.
5. Merge Down. Duplicate desaturated layer.
6. On upper desaturated layer, set the blending mode to multiply. Run Filter—Blur—Gaussian Blur with the same settings and used in step 4.
7. Merge Down. This is your base sketch layer.
8. Make 3 copies of the base sketch layer.
9. On the top duplicate, run Filter—Brush Strokes—Sumi. Reduce opacity to 50%.
10. On the middle duplicate, Run Filter—Brush Strokes—Dark Strokes. Set the blending mode to Pin Light.
11. On the lower duplicate, run Filter—Artistic—Fresco. Set the blending mode to Luminosity.
12. Turn on the color layer at the top. Set the blending mode to color.
13. Add a new pattern fill layer at the top. Set the blending mode to Soft Light and the opacity to 70%. This will add texture.

Update: after playing with this, it seems you will get better results if after step 12 you duplicate the upper layer and change the blending mode (multiply, color burn, overlay, experiment) at around 50%

Danny , very fantastic picture given for the work.
It is straight infront of me and I realised that how huge it is.
It is even in my reach to paint by hand.

But I got a rough pastel only. here it is .....

Here is another Highpass Ship .

The game is :- Filter >Distort > Wave >
Type - Sine - Wrap around

No. of generations - 1
Wave length --min - 5 - max -7

Amplitude -- 2, - 4

Horizontal -- 57% vertical --81%

And applied High pass filter...

Did chroma corrections in the levels by adjusting three channels one after another..

Mixing things up a bit. Still using Paint Engine, Impressionist along with color/saturation adjustments, just, after the color/saturation adjustments, starting with Paint Engine first (Arctic Preset). I then do Detailed Colored Pencil. I add the PS Chrome on a separate layer set to Overlay then Open the whole Shabang in GIMP for texture bumpmapping (adding the canvas and such).

That is a very nice painting effect Ikroll. You do manage to find some nice photos to work from.

I used Danny's photobobbie action to get a painted effect.

I just wish I could play with the myriad of cool actions out there, but alas, I have PS 5.5 and can't run most of them. Very cool effect Cathy.

Anyway, I've been experimenting with various blends of Impressionist and Paint Engine. Just started a Degas Thread here (I know I'm not even close to Degas quality, but I had a lot of fun experimenting) where I posted a few renderings using a very similar (maybe a bit more mature) technique that I used for the ship. The technique I used is actually outlined on Fred Miranda's site which you can find a link if you click on the thread. Still have some tweaking to do. I'm also having to do a lot of cleaning/smudging with my tired point finger and mouse.

I wanted to see a refection of the boat in the water.

PhotoShop CS2

1. Enlarged the canvas to accomodate the reflection
2. Selected the entire photo and copied the selection to a new layer then moved the copy below the original.
3. Transformed the copy by dragging the top transform handle "through" itself vertically. to create the reflection then skewed the copy slightly. Cloned in the missing areas of the resulting skew.
4. Did some distortions to the copy
5. Ran a minor lighting effect
6. Cropped the entire image to remove excess canvas.

I did this one very quickly, but as I look at it now, I probably should have done a little more clone work on some of the "land mass" areas that would not reflect so far off shore.

Vijayan: I like your second effect, cool distortion/wave effect.
lkroll: creative use of oil, impressionist et al, how many softwares do you really have !
Cazubi: Buzzed effect seems cooler than photobobbie one.
Swampy: Cool reflectios in the water, quite realistic too.

Since I think, that WaterColor is usually bright and colorful, I did this entirely in Painter 9 without any adjustments of any kind. The kids love these bright images.

1. Open Image in Painter: File > Open
2. Clone Image. File > Clone.
3. Lift Canvas to watercolor layer. Layers > Lift Canvas to Watercolor Layer.
4. Then Layers > Wet Entire Water Color Layer.
5. Then Paint with WaterColor Brush, Wash Camel variant while still Wet from 4 at size 26 opacity 16, feature 5.3
6. After you have painted in 5 very lightly, you do not need more than 2 passes over entire area; then switch brushes to Watercolor: Splatter Water variant and just dab a little spots here and there over the entire canvas to give it a water drippage effect. You do not need to do this effect, if you do not like it.
7. Now dry the layer, Layers > Dry WaterColor Layer.
8. The Water Color Layer is always in Gel Blend Mode. Change that to Color Mode through Layers Palette. This changes it to a colorful mode.
9. To add a texture to it and muck it up a bit, go to paper textures and pick French Water Color Palette from the Tool Menu. Then go to Effects > 3D Brush Strokes and here I increased softness to 20 % or more, as I like things mucked up nicely. The larger the number the more funky the look. (Here you can fine tune all the elements the way you want).
10. You now have a colorful watercolor like effect.

I have seen mention of Danny's photobobbie action. Is that available somewhere? I like the results obtained with this action on the boat! thanks in advance.

After some playing around I ended up with a somewhat worn/rustic/aged look.

1. made a background with the fiber filter
2. added a layer with the wood pattern overlay
3. added a layer with the boat and adjusted the opacity to around 60%
3. to get rid of the purple background but keep my boat's rustic color, added another boat layer, adjusted it to a desaturated blue, knocked out the boat, blended at 100% in color mode
4. added a sketch layer (duplicated original image and desaturated, duplicated again and inverted, used color dodge blending mode, applied gaussian blur) - these layers are merged in the screenshot
5. adjusted sketch layer opacity
6. added a clouds filter on top, adjusted to 40% opacity in color burn blending mode
7. made slight adjustments to the curves to get the final image
