Tutorial (link): Tim Shelbourne tutorials FIXED!

Let's try this again - the sequel.

Here's an updated and working link: http://www.graphic-design.com/Photos...tch/index.html

These look very interesting.

Danny..thank you. Can't wait to try the chalk sketch one.

Judy... did you click on the pix? ..it worked for me as I had downloaded the chalk tutorial. However, I didn't try the others three...

Update..just went back and tried all of them...works fine. Just click on the pix ...it opened the full tutorial for me, using the link above in Danny's post..

Tim confessed website building isn't his strong suit. I didn't notice the Tutorial link didn't work because I was already on the tutorials page.

See the revised 1st post for what does work.

Thanks for pointing this out, Wendy. Sure appreciate it.

Danny,

Tim has done some alterations to the tutorial section on his site ... and now has included instructions to click on the photo to access the tutorial. Sadly something has gone awry with the alterations as three out of the four links now do not work ... Sigh !! ... very big sigh!!

I just tried the link at the top of this thread... the "click on the tutorial pic" links worked for me.

It must have been a temp. outage. Try 'em again and see if they work for you, too.

Help with Charcoal

Even tho' Tim's tutorial says the level is "easy", I'm stuck!
I do not seem to have the brush he suggests...Charcoal Large Smear...I reset my tools, presets, brushes, emptied the dishwasher, folded laundry and tried again...and finally made up my own brush. Can anyone guide me please?
Always a thanks,
Deb

Deb:

This might be a function of which version of Photoshop you're using.

Which version are you using?

I've got PS 7 and the "Charcoal Large Smear" is among the default brush set.

There are different ways to do this. Here's one:
* Choose the Brush tool from the Tools palette
* Right-click to show the Brushes palette
* From the menu choose Reset brushes...
* IMPORTANT: In the dialog box I clicked "Append" because I didn't want to completely replace my current collection of brushes.
* "Charcoal Large Smear" was 13th from the bottom of the appended brushes

Does this help?

What! No pictures?

Here's my first effort at the Chalk technique.
I tried to keep close to the tutorial but I can't wait to invent some new versions for this!

No Luck Yet

I too have PS 7, Danny and I though I knew how to reset brushes, etc. I guess I might have to reinstall from the software? Weird eh? The funny thing is I might still be doing something wrong as I have PS 7 on two machines and can't find the default brushes in either place. Will work on it some more. Anymore suggestions, welcome.

Hey, Ro...

That's a pretty neat effect. I know what you mean about this method having "potential." I look forward to seeing you take this to another level or two.

The good news: There's a good chance you won't have to reinstall PS.

If you were looking in \Brushes for the default set, you won't find them there.

They (along with the other default settings, such as actions) are stashed here:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Required\Default Brushes.abr

Try this:
* From the Brushes menu choose Load brushes...
* Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Required\Default Brushes.abr
* Choose option "append"
* Scroll to the bottom of the brushes and count 13 up from the last one

Is it there?

Does this get you any farther?

After thought

It seems that I am able to reset brushes, choose defaults from the path you showed me...but when I go to find the brush am I looking for a name or a shape that is 13th down...I thought I'd be looking for names....

Ah... I *NEVER* thought of this as a possible issue. It's definitely difficult to identify a particular brush if you can only see it's shape.

From the Brushes menu, choose among the view options, e.g., Text only, Large List, Small List, etc. I prefer "Large List" myself.

I think we're almost there.

Well,
Hi all, I've been frustrated for days now, watching this thread and not being able to reply due to work stuff, but I am here now! lol The brushes identify themselves if you hover your mouse pointer over them for a minute. I promise to be an active member now!
Kind regards to all,
Tim.

Oh My!

Thank you Danny and Great to have Tim aboard. Guess what I found! Yep, Danny, I did load them per your instructions, and Yep, Tim...when I hovered I found the name of the brush...it's there! Now, I get to play. I love this place and all the support. Be prepared, will open my Painter IX tonight which my daughter bought from her college book store, the academic version, no manual...so look out!

Here's a variation. Although it varied so much only the coloured paper survived from Tim's original!

1) Get Luminosity: Solid color, black, blending as colour. Merge to this layer;
2) Make strong luminosity: Duplicate. Equalize, GBlur 10 and blend into original luminosity as Soft Light 50%, merge these two;
3) Make paper: As per original, just make sure that the L(ab) Luminosity is at 50% for both the colours;
4) Show only extremes: This is the good bit. With your strong luminosity layer above the paper, select blending options. Cross over the blend-if sliders so white is on the left and black on the right. Open the sliders with <alt> until they meet in the middle (see attachment). The mid-tones vanish.
5) Adjust Levels: Open up levels <ctrl><L> and twiddle the sliders to taste;
6) Mask out unwanted parts;
7) Texture: New layer, 50% grey, apply texture Sandstone and set blending to Linear Light.
