Tutorial: Painter X, Smart Strokes, autopainting John Derry

I learned a lot about how to use the Smart Strokes brushes and settings from this tutorial.

Re: Tutorial: Painter X, Smart Strokes, autopainting John Derry

Thanks Danny, checking it out now! Just last night I was using Painter X for the first time (took delivery of it recently) and was trying to convert photos to paintings as examples for my site, since I don't paint... It was giving me a little grief until I understood the procedure and found the sweet spot (I was even reading the manual!). The auto painting procedure reminds me of Studio Artist, which I think may be a little easier to use for this purpose and perhaps does a better job--but until I have more experience with Painter I can't really say.

Re: Tutorial: Painter X, Smart Strokes, autopainting John Derry

Until I read this tutorial, "I didn't get it either." It connected many dots for me.

After a little experimenting I found that auto-paint works pretty well with some of the popular custom brushes. This one is based on Den's Funky Chunky.

I needed to add some detail afterwords (Funky Chunky did not render sufficient detail), so I engaged the Impressionist plugin for that (separate layer, applied with layer mask), then a texture was added to unify the overall look.

Anyway, for non-artists like me autopainting a nice tool to have in your toolbox.

Very nice Danny. I really like the effect your efforts achieved.

I've had so much trouble using Painter since the last rebuild of my computer that I spent some time emulating Den's Funky Chunky in Photoshop. Now I use it with the AHB and am thrilled with the results.
