ahb and sketch combined Tut

I thought i would start another thread rather than make the other one even longer to read

This is how i make a ahb and sketch painting

open your original (image 1)

then make a sketch/outline layer ( there are various ways of doing this just pick your favorite way or follow Swampy's tut ) or I will be adding a action for a sketch/outline layer in the next post

on this sketch layer make the blendmode overlay

Under the sketch layer make a new layer and fill with white
you should now only see white ( all will be revealed soon)
see layer palette image

make this layer the active layer by clicking on it
start using your ahb ( i have used trimoons spater 15a brush ) you should start seeing colour and sketch appear

add another layer, reduce the brush size to about 20 and carry on brushing (image2)

On another layer use the detail brush to add detail and definition in places (image 3)

this is pretty much the way i explained in this Thread

the blend mode on the sketch layer can be changed for different looks try softlight and multilply
then flatten

Finally

The colours can seem a bit washed out so tweek the hue/sat or selective colours or
duplicate the background layer move to the top of the stack and choose the colour blendmode
sharpen add a texture if wanted and voila (image 4)

As ususal this will not always work on all images all though you do get some great painted effects Watch out for images with a lot of white though

Re: ahb and sketch combined Tut

I'm like you, Palms. I've made an action for the black/white line sketch 'cause I do it so much. Color Burn is also another blend mode option that works well for the sketch.

Krystyna

I don't know what the problem is. This is the second video stored on Photobuckt that has gotten truncated. I've got a request over there in the forums to try to figure out what the problem is and I'll get it fixed ASAP.

It got that i could do the sketch technique in my sleep, so i made the action now i am not sure if i could do the sketch without the action! !

A tip for the lineart/sketch if it is too detailed or dark open levels and slide the grey triangle towards the left, or if you want it darker take the grey slider to the right
( you could use blend if but i am not as sure on using this )

oh and please post any results you have i would like to see them

Re: ahb and sketch combined Tut

Christine, The line art tutorial should play in full now. The Photobucket help team has looked at the truncated version and agree that it's not playing full length, but have no explanation. I've re-uploaded the tute, so it should work now.

Re: ahb and sketch combined Tut

Palms, you asked for it...using your action, the ahb on 3 layers, on top a pattern AL "dirt" (blended on softlight with 62% opacity) and finally a play with Cybia Embossworks (blend normal opacity 56%).

@ Swampy, hope you don't mind that I used your lion pic on this one...

Re: ahb and sketch combined Tut

wow some great results
glad the tut is ok as i wont be around to answer questions for a few days, off for a break and to get some photo's as well as study some art work

Rogier that has turned out very well

Ol Baldy that looks super,
if you want to soften/spatter the edges of the painting a new trick i have learnt is to increase the tolerance of the brush to about 40%, and lower opacity to about 15% give it a try and let me know what you think all settings are approx just have a fiddle around with them

that is a very impressive lion Amica

Nice Tut Mr Palms, used your action on this one, then duped the sketch layer and changed blend to multiply to emphasise the lines more. Also added a paper texture.
